Indonesia activities and field sites

I-REDD+ research in Indonesia takes place in Kutai Barat District in East Kalimantan. The field site coordinator is WWF Indonesia. Research focuses on two communities, Batu Majang, which is located on the upper-middle part of the District, and Penarung, which is located in the southern part.

Both villages practice raditional shifting cultivation of upland rice and also grow commercial crops such as rubber, cocoa and rattan. In Batu Majang, a large timber concession exploits the surrounding forests whereas in penarung, timber extraction ended some time ago and oil palm plantation and mining companies are moving in. There is considerable forest left in both areas, but in penarung the pressure for conversion is very high.
